“The violence of the first half of the 20th century has given way to a period of peace and stability unprecedented in European history.” The statement of the European Commision in 2003 does not convey the same sentiment of ambition, assurance and hope. In 2018, it reads more like an epitaph for a lost golden age. No one knows if we can one day overcome chauvinism and parochial nationalism, but surely the ground Europe is currently sitting on does look muddy. Like the quote of Ivan Turgenev, we simply "sit in the mud and reach for the stars".
